Where Should You Take Your CFP® Certification Coursework?

If you want to earn CFP® certification in 2026, one of your first steps is to complete the required education coursework with a CFP Board Registered Program. In addition to helping you prepare for the CFP® exam, this coursework will give you the crucial knowledge you’ll need to provide high-quality, trustworthy advice to your future clients. But how do you choose an education program that’s right for you?

There are more than 300 CFP Board Registered Programs offered at colleges and universities around the U.S., and more than 80 programs with online learning options. These programs cover the same core curriculum but vary in style, length, cost, location and more. When you are considering a program, ask these important questions to help you determine if a program fits your needs:

  • What educational level is the curriculum (certificate, undergraduate, master’s or doctorate level)?
  • How long does it take to complete?
  • How much does the program cost? Does that amount include books, tests or other fees?
  • How often are courses offered? Will class schedules fit around my other commitments?
  • What is my learning style? Will it be more helpful to take online courses or to learn in a more traditional classroom setting?
  • Does my employer have a preferred education provider?
  • Does the program have a CFP® exam review course? Does it partner with a review course provider?

If the options still seem overwhelming, CFP Board has created a helpful flow chart to help you narrow down the programs that might be a good fit for you. Explore the chart here to get started!

The answers to these questions will help you find the type of program that will fit your learning style, budget and schedule. When you’re ready to choose an education program, CFP Board can help you find one. Commit to getting started on this requirement in 2026 – find the right program today.
